This novel was great, but not as great as Cloudatlas. But then again, this novel was Mitchell's first. Also, when I finally realized who The Zookeeper was, I almost flipped!!!!

Ghostwritten is a mere shadow of Cloud Atlas. It feels more like a practice round for Mitchell which, in a way, I am glad for, considering how it eventually led to Cloud Atlas, a book that shares most of the same themes. The difference, however, is that Cloud Atlas does so with much more finesse. Here, it's a series of loosely connected stories with a vague theme thrown into the mix. Like a drop of ink in the sea, it's hard to notice the colour once it dissipates. Read Cloud Atlas instead and give this a miss.

It was fun but then got boring. Jumping from one character to another aimlessly was disappointing. I didn't care for any of the characters and couldn't accept the idea that there are another 6 characters that will be introduced. So I just quit.

Solid five stars - Having read a couple of other Mitchell books, I was expecting good things from this as it was his first novel, but oh mama! This one took my expectations and laughed at them in the rearview mirror as it shot right past them! Told through several seemingly loosely connected chapters in the form of short stories, everything comes together in the end to make it a strongly cohesive narrative that ties up all of its loose ends in a wonderfully poetic and spectacular fashion. Mitchell is quickly becoming one of my favourite story-tellers and my only complaint is that I didn't take the time to read him earlier.

I've finally finished this book. I started this in 2015, got quite far and then put it away again. I have no clue what happened. So I've started it again and then again. And now I've managed to actually start and finish it. Some stories I liked better than others. But I've enjoyed it and I am glad that I can now send it to another Bookcrossing member.

What a fascinating book. The ending was spectacular.
