Wow, I ended up really enjoying this book! While Lin and Kel are the main narrators, I was enamored with all of the characters in this story. And honestly, through them and Clare’s writing, I fell in love with Castellane. The ending was such a well-earned moments and so cinematic in how it played out. Really excited to see what the next installment holds!

My only qualm is with the audiobook specifically. There were two narrators, one for Kel and one for Lin, and the character voicing was split by section rather than characters. For example, I wish that Kel was still voiced by the narrator for Kel, or that Ji-an & Merren had one voice. Just made following along slightly confusing. 🤷‍♀️

I really liked this book! I enjoyed the characters and complex world building.
I’m excited to see if Conor doesn’t actually suck in future books and who Lin ends up with!
Lin is my favorite!!

This was my first Cassandra Clare. I won't be going back and reading any of the shadowhunters after this bit I do think I'm intrigued enough to continue in this series.

It did remind me a lot of V E Schwab's Darker Shade of Magic series with elements from Full Metal Alchemist.

I have mixed feelings about a lot of the elements. The characters, the plot, the overall world. I like Kel for the most part. Conor is strange but I think he's on track for interesting development. Lin is frustratingly stubborn and argumentative.
I don't understand why she is so contrary with Conor straight off the bat.

I enjoyed the casual queerness.

This book is very long. It doesn't feel super different to any other kingdom based fantasy.

This is a slow burn compared to The Shadowhunter Chronicles. I love that series and was excited to read this book, I went into this thinking it would be like TSC but I was wrong.

I knew it wouldn’t be the same as her other books but I thought there would be more action like her other series. This is definitely setting up the characters and is world building. The last section of the book is where it begins to pick up. The ending of the book does leave you on a cliffhanger and the last half of the book has made me excited to see where the story goes.

Go in with an open mind and just be ready for a slower paced series.

This is one of my favorite fantasy reads of the year, which is saying something as I'm over 100 books and most of them are fantasy at this halfway point. The pacing was slow at the beginning with the dual POV, but everything really started to come together and it was entertaining throughout. I appreciated the range of characters that all had some depth and some different motivations - there's no obvious "bad" guy and no obvious "good" guy in the trap that so much fantasy falls into. I found myself still thinking about the characters and the plot questions days later and am already impatient for book two. There are some fairly clear similarities to real life places/cultures/religions and in some places I had enough background to follow and in others I could only tell that names were similar.

A very interesting storyline. However, some details are over explained when not needed & some wording used to frequently. Overall an exciting story making the reader hungry for more.

The narrative and characters were well done and interesting, it was hard to put the book down as the end of chapters left me wanting more.

My only problem was that the descriptions of things and places were often over worded and felt unnecessary as well as frequently having the same descriptor words right after each other.

Overall is was filled with adventure, mystery and some romance which I enjoyed greatly !
