This wasn't an amazing book, but it sure was interesting. I thought it was super predictable until I realized how extremely wrong I was the entire time. Hattie is such a well-fleshed out character--she has more facets of her personality than any character I've ever read. And by the end of this novel, I just found myself feeling worse and worse for her, not because of the obvious--that she was brutally murdered--but also because of her thoughts and her mind. She deserved better.

This book really made me think so much about what is wrong, what is right, and what is friendship. I really loved Del--he brought an old-time feeling to the story that wouldn't have otherwise existed if not for his character.

Overall, this was an alright read and I finished it in three days. If you're into murder-mystery, definitely read it. I don't think I would re-read this, however, because after being at 75% of the way done with the book, I found myself continuing to read because I wanted to make sure I was right in who killed her (I was not) rather than actually just wanting to enjoy the novel. Take that as you will!

Read this as a buddy read and it was really fun to discuss each day. Lots of theories on who did it and why - fun discussions!

I picked this book up in the hotel library whilst on holiday. It would not have been an obvious choice for me, but sometimes reading something you wouldn’t normally choose is a good thing. It was an interesting plot and l liked how the story was told from the different perspectives of the main characters. I would recommend this book to a friend.

Probably more like 3-1/2 stars. Kept me interested, killer wasn't who I expected, and yet...ending was kind of a rushed piece of deus ex machina drivel.

This book really had me hooked. I didn't anticipate giving it a full five stars -- that's not a rating I give too often. I just really enjoyed it. This was one of the first time in a mystery novel lately that had me really upset about the death of the victim. Too often, the person murdered is just a plot point; the investigation is the real main character. But I really found myself feeling a sort of grief for Hattie even though it was made clear from the very beginning her fate. I thought that was unique. It also had this kinda Megan Abbott meets Madame Bovary feel to it.

Anyway, I was really surprised by this one. Hope you enjoyed my rambling 4am review. :oksignemoji:

Predictable. I couldn’t really connect with any of the characters. That may have been due to the narration of the audiobook as well. It wasn’t the best. And there were a lot of details that didn’t connect. Peter didn’t like tofu, and a few chapters later he said he could live on Ramen and tofu. Little things like that that were not consistent and bugged me. That being said, it was interesting enough to finish.

Everything You Want Me To Be by Mindy Meija read like an episode of 48 Hours. That's not a bad thing, but it's the best parallel I can draw. I wanted to LOVE this one, and instead I just liked it. This one focuses on Hattie Hoffman, a high school senior who is found murdered. Through flashbacks that cover the previous year and present-day discoveries from multiple characters, it is revealed that Hattie had a big secret involving a relationship. The question then becomes what role did this relationship play in her death? The story comes in pieces as you try to figure out who is responsible. I didn't guess the twist on this one, and in fact, there was even a fake twist! I appreciated that, but something in the formula just didn't make this one totally my jam.
