I have changed this review. Although it was well written and an emotional read. I think the ending was a complete flop. It was done so well up until the ending. What would have been a good ending, I believe, is for the protagonist to accept that her family has moved on and give each of them a sign to say she loves them or to say farewell. Instead, she falls from heaven and lands in someone else's body. To make it worse, instead of catching her perpetrator and getting retribution for her and the other women the George raped, or having the opportunity to say goodbye to her family in person, she instead decides to use Ruth's body to have sex with her childhood sweetheart and then goes back to heaven...
I just cannot understand why this is a better ending than any other ending possible. It is such a shame because the rest of the novel is so beautiful.

Alice Sebold's writing style is interesting to say the least. I enjoyed the overall story she was trying to tell and I found myself comforted about dying at the end of the book.

Phải nói, Hình hài yêu dấu (The Lovely Bones) là một trong những bộ phim ám ảnh nhất mình từng xem. Hồi cấp một hay cấp hai tiếp xúc với các kênh phim trên ti vi, mình đã xem được bộ phim này, một bộ phim có cảm giác vừa hư cấu mang trí tưởng tượng con trẻ, vừa hiện thực tàn nhẫn đến ghê người.
Đẩy nhanh gần 10 năm, kí ức về bộ phim kia dần phai nhạt nhưng vẫn hằn sâu, mình đọc cuốn tiểu thuyết gốc của nó. Dưới ngòi bút của Alice Sebold, hiện tại đan cài với quá khứ với gia đình nhà Salmon: những kỉ niệm của Susie cứ chồng chất lên nhau, khiến cảm giác những sự kiện hiện tại của gia đình càng thêm điều đau thương.
Tuy vậy, cuốn sách không vẽ được một bức tranh sống động như bản dựng phim của nó. Hình hài yêu dấu có nhịp chậm: phần lớn cuốn sách nằm trong khoảng thời gian một đến hai năm sau cái chết của Susie. Sau đó, tác giả đã lướt qua gần chục năm tiếp theo của gia đình ở lại, khiến mình thấy hơi hẫng nhịp vì vốn bộ phim mình từng xem không như vậy (hoặc là do mình cũng không còn nhớ nữa). Vì vậy, trong quá trình đọc mình đã đọc lướt rất nhiều đoạn, chỉ mong cho nhanh hết cuốn sách vì cảm giác cách viết dài lê thê.
Vì là một độc giả sốt ruột :)), mình đã đọc qua một số bài nhận xét khác của các độc giả Goodreads và nhận được rất nhiều ý kiến trái chiều về cái kết của câu chuyện. Ước nguyện cuối của Susie, và ôi chúa ơi cám ơn các nhà làm phim đã không cho nó lên phim.
Giờ đã hiểu sao người ta ghét cái kết này.
Tóm lại, mình không có ấn tượng gì lắm về cuốn sách (không áp dụng cho bộ phim nha). Cái kết với Harvey chết (hell yeah), gia đình lớn đoàn tụ khá là viên mãn, và mình không hề thích cách một trong những việc giúp Susie siêu thoát là nhập xác Ruth.

Susie is 14 years old in heaven; as she was at the time of her death. She watches the ongoing search for her killer by her family and a detective.
I was emotionally pulled by this book, totally immersed in the aftermath of a brutal case and the ripple effects on non-family members as well as how family members dealt with grief in very different ways.
There was a supernatural element toward the end of the book that didn't quite work for me. I won't put a spoiler here, but that's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. That said, it was a powerful book that has stayed with me since I read it.

I just cannot do this anymore. I hate this book with a passion- it is just sooooo boring. I thought this would be a thriller but it is not. Unhauling this as soon as I can. It has literally taken me over a month to read 120 pages.
