Very intense and graphic, trigger warnings include miscarriage, violent sexual assault, murder, gun violence, school shooting. The pacing felt off/lost momentum in some parts where certain sections were retold from different POVs but otherwise was a gripping read.

It has a violent beginning which was hard.  The story is captivating and I enjoyed it quite a bit.  I was not overly enchanted by the ending .  Characters were well developed.

I really liked both sisters in this story, they felt real and the story definitely kept me interested. I wanted to know what happened, one twist I didn’t see coming until right as it was about to happen and the other I called quite awhile before the reveal but I don’t necessarily see that as a negative.

My biggest compliant is that I kept having to read things over and over, like I enjoyed reading from both sister’s experiences of what happened but too much was repeated. I didn’t want to read the whole scene twice - it could’ve been shortened. And some of the details about like Samantha’s house and cat and swimming routine could’ve been left out as it was repeated too and made me want to skim it instead of read it.

I really liked Ben’s character and even Rusty was entertaining and the complicated but loving relationship between the family seemed real.

A really good example of the genre, The Good Daughter has all the right pieces in terms of characterization and secrets. The plot stalls in a few places in service of lengthy dialogue between characters (some of the characters don't say much to each other, but when they do, it is several pages of dialogue).
There are some moments I found predictable, some secrets obvious to the reader before they are obvious to the characters. That said, there are some surprises too, and Slaughter paces these really well. The two sisters, Samantha and Charlie, are well-crafted in character and there are several characters who really trigger ambivalence, something I actually like.
Content warning as there is graphic description of sexual assault, and murder, but that's not unexpected for the genre.
The book also rests on some stereotypes of rural life, but is relatively gentle in its condemnation, painting with a medium width brush, let's say, assigning the worst to specific characters.

Definitely check trigger warnings! This book was good with an unpredictable twist. It drug in some spots and the chapters were too long for my preference, but I still flew through this book. I was hesitant to pick it up since Pretty Girls by the same author was such a let down, but this book did not disappoint. Again, check trigger warnings before reading
