“I didn’t want anyone coming in, burying severed hands in my couch, or worse—burying severed hands in my couch, and then removing them, so that I’d never know.” pg 195

(3.5 rounded up)
another odd book from Moshfegh, whose writing style always captivates me. here we follow a 72 year old woman’s train of thoughts and hallucinations where you’re left wondering if anything, including the inciting incident, really happened. not my favorite but also something i was able to sink into.

Pffft. I won't be reading anymore books by this author. Her style of writing, themes and characters are just frustrating or just outright unlikeable. It's not that I don't get it, it's just not enjoyable or what I consider a worthy read. I wouldn't consider this horror. If you're looking for horror this is not horror. It's the unwinding of someone's mental stability. Most of the book is internal monologue. The ending just left a bad taste.

I get what the author was going for, but this was way too sad and muddled for me to enjoy.

JUST FINISHED THIS AND IT IS NOT WORTH READING. Neurotic old woman
kills her dog in an attempt to evade her own morality.
genuinely beyond annoying character and flat plot line. Felt like I was spiralling while reading it, how awful. That being said it is so typical Moshfegh and I do really enjoy her writing, poetic style and general depravity. I’ve come to expect this feeling when reading her books, and in a way I crave this.

I realized what happens at the end and I want to save myself the emotional upheaval.
