Dear The Benevolent Society of I’ll-mannered Ladies,

“Then it is settled. We shall be useful. But just as importantly we shall be defiant, occasionally ill-mannered, and completely indomitable.”

Augustus is such a powerful character. She goes in the list  of my favorites.

This isn’t just a regency story of societal ladies getting into mischief, but a story of renegades. All women (and anyone not straight man) should be a renegade.

This was an incredible story.
Sisterhood
Self-worth
Defying social norms.
Justice
Loyalty
Love

All the stars.

Really enjoyable - I enjoyed the age of the spinster FMC/narrator and the book (and the author) were really working on coming to grips with some of the less savory aspects of the regency period, rather than the usual bowdlerized romancelandia version of the regency. A hint of romance, and some good short mysteries - I really can't wait for the sequel.

4.5 rounded up.

This book took me on a ride. I'm not going to lie, there were a couple of times I raised my eyebrows, but as a whole, I just loved the characters in this book. I also think the author clearly did her research from a historical standpoint, and there were some really nice details, like mentioning the Chesterfield catalog of the time. Those were all little details that helped better immerse you into the story. It has some awkward edges to it, but all in all, very engaging.

Content note: There are some difficult situations in this book, such as suggested SA of children, and involuntary incarceration of women into a mental facility (which were real things at the time.. for for a long time after). So, some of it gets a little more intense than you might be imagining based on the name and cover art. But, still a very good book. Leaves a good transition into the next one..

This book is roller coaster of well-written emotions. A mystery and love story, mixed with horrifying and sobering depictions of the circumstances women and girls endured in Regency England.
