I couldn't get into it. I just couldn't. I'm sorry. Maybe someday I'll read it, and it will be different. I don't really want to criticize the book. I think the art was great and the arrangement and such was really cool. The more poetic passages layered on top of parts of the story really had a certain depth. But again, I found myself rushing through them.

The main character seemed like a wisp of smoke floating through a dreadful nightmare which never ended, signified, or resolved.

Maybe I didn't like it because it was too truly depressing. Or maybe I didn't like it because it was so emptily depressing.

Even the moments that seemed clearly to connect threads of the narrative into meaningful wholes merely reflected the emptiness of the main character and the greater emptiness of the end.

Maybe I just don't like feeling empty.

Memorable and engrossing. This particular story is greatly elevated through the magnificent accompanying artwork that gives the material so much additional depth; Ware conveys so much through each of his drawings, whether intricate or simple, and is creative with his page layouts. Jimmy is such a sad sack that at times the consistently depressing events of his life become a little much to take, so the parallel story following Jimmy's grandfather as a child is a welcome break, although almost equally full of melancholy. There are a few details that I was left wondering about and I'm not entirely sure what the takeaway of the tale is, yet I ultimately found this worth the read.

Around page 360 I broke completely down at the simultaneous tragedy and shear beauty of the thing. An artifact of the sublime. The most moving piece of art I've read in a very long time. I love you, dad.

I don’t know how to rate it this. Jimmy Corrigan does things I’ve never seen comics/graphic novels do. It pushes limits and breaks boundaries. It’s technically “great.” On the other hand, it was 0/10 on the enjoyment scale for me. There is very little actual narrative, it’s hard to follow, it’s dark, it’s depressing, it’s long. I confess I skimmed the last quarter or so.
