This book was phenomenal! Under normal circumstances I’m sure I would have devoured this in a couple of days and then binged the tv show, but with everything going on I struggled to get into it and then when I finally did, I could not put it down!

I never skimmed a book so much as I did this one. Some of it read like character sketch work done before the novel was written. Interesting enough to read through. Loved the section of Mia in NY developing her artistic chops. Could have done with a little less Shaker Heights. All in all, not bad.

My favorite part of this book was the longer chapters that took a deep dive into the characters past lives...in my opinion, these chapters held the best writing in this book. I appreciated seeing how Mia's neighbor mentored her...I kept thinking, she would have likely never been where she was as a photographer had it not been for him taking notice and offering his wisdom and teaching. So much power in this small act!!

Maybe I should stop having high expectations for popular books, since I felt that this read was a total letdown. Even though I found the topic at hand to be thought-provoking. the execution was mediocre at best. I had no attachment to any of the characters that, to my defense, had little to no substance and were depicted in a very shallow way.
I, for sure, can sympathise with the aspects of motherhood that were touched upon in this book, however, the more I read on, the more I had a certain distain for the characters and their decisions (despite understanding that there is no right or wrong decision).

Maybe it’s because I don’t like drama, but I just found it all pretty dumb.
