You looked at them and wondered why they were so ugly; you looked closely and could not find the source. Then you realized that it came from conviction, their conviction. It was as though some mysterious all-knowing master had given each one a cloak of ugliness to wear, and they had each accepted it without question.

Regarding subject matters touched upon, this book is a difficult read. Morrison's writing is absolutely beautiful, making this novel haunting.

My one issue was towards the novel's end with the scene between Pecola and her "friend". That could have been shorter. Over-did the point of her innocence and desire for what she sees as beauty.

Regardless, the book completed it's mission and then some of depicting the effects of internalized racism and abuse. That lends itself to dissection. The clear yet poetic writing of Morrison is inspirational to me as writer, and I will be picking up more of her books.

Mostly just feeling "meh" about it. I understand why it was a classic, and I appreciate the story the book was telling, but it is not necessarily one I would read again. Read content warnings before reading!

This is the first book that I’ve ever read that’s given me such a visceral reaction to its contents. Do not take the TWs lightly. 

I absolutely adore Morrison’s way of writing and will be reading her other novels when I can get my hands on them.
