I actually loved the story this book followed but for whatever reason my focus while reading this book absolutely falthered and I feel like I had to reread so many parts that I couldnt enjoy it to the fullest. I’ll reread it some time.

I am slowly listening my way through this one - almost a series of amusing vignettes, rather than a novel. While there's the basic plotline of three dissolute young fellows rowing up the river with the dog, Montmorency (oh, how I want a dog called Montmorency), there's lots of, "Well do I remember the incident of the comic song. It went like this..."

The language is fabulous, and listening to it as an audio book is perfect - I think I might have become bored if reading it myself. Sometimes, with older books, I need someone else to be emphasising things to me in order to appreciate the humour or wittiness of particular passages. So this worked well. Occasionally the author goes off into lengthy ponderings of the beauty of this curve of the river, or this little town, and sometimes this seems at odds with the light hearted story telling of the rest of the book. But it is great fun nonetheless.

Alright, I feel like 2 stars might be a harsh rating but I just didn't enjoy the book. I listened to the audiobook and found myself so bored with the story and was annoyed at how every chapter the author would briefly address the "present" timeline for the main character, but then describe in great detail one or two anecdotes that somewhat tied to the present timeline. The comedy in the book was definitely the type of comedy that is so obvious or ironic that it's funny - which sort of had the opposite effect for me.
