“Keeper of the Scarlet Petals,” by A. N. Skye

To be a Keeper is to dedicate your entire life to protecting the wealthy you are charged with. Jasmine is in training to be a Keeper after a life of being a thief on the streets. She is assigned early to protect a young nobleman whose family was murdered. The nobleman is drives her mad with annoyance and she struggles with keeping him alive with assassins out to end him.

I really liked this book. It has a lot of bickering and rivals to lover’s trope. I liked that the warriors aren’t just warriors but also caretakers doing tasks like cooking food for their assigned charges, it made the story stand out in uniqueness. The book was on the slow side because not a lot actually happens, it’s a lot of daily things with some action once in a while but I like the world that was built, and the characters were heartwarming and sweet. 4 out of 5 stars.

Thank you for the ARC, Netgalley.

Keeper of Scarlet Petals is written in a 3rd person single POV, however there are two chapters written in someone else's POV. The chapters are fairly short and although there is romance and two open door scenes, it takes a backseat and the story is more focused on the magic.

This was fun, and had some great, hilarious scenes. I mean burning the eggs? Absolutely hilarious, had me crying with laughter! The steak scene was also super cute and heartwarming.

The world building was easy to follow and the magic system is fun and unique.

I, personally, would have liked to learn more about the world and the magic system. I feel like there is a lot of potential for this book and series. I just would have liked it to have more substance. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Keeper of Scarlet Petals was a fun read. A school of magic, attempted murder… what’s not to like? The characters are likable (even if a bit basic at times), the magic system is unique and interesting. The romantic interest is a bit predictable as are some other elements of the story, but no more than most YA novels. This books mostly reads as YA, but the language and spice put into NA.

I’m excited to see how the story continues to develop. I’m giving this a 3 because that’s what I give books I enjoy, but am not obsessed with. Would definitely recommend!

Thank you to netgalley, Atheon Books, and A.N. Skye for this ARC!

The premise of this book had me excited and intrigued, but unfortunately it just did not hit the mark for me personally. It most certainly did not read at being in the New Adult category, and the romance felt incredibly rushed on the MC Jasmine's side. I wish the magic system and world building had been expanded upon instead of the monotone feeling thoughts of Jasmine. The other MC, Asher, felt like he had more depth in quite a bit of the book. I fully understand that this A.N. Skye's first published work and that it is supposed to be the beginning of a series by them, but overall it just lacks in so many different areas. The potential is there for this to turn into something amazing, so hopefully their writing and story telling continues to improve because I think if there was more clarification and development it would have been an absolute hit!
