All I ever wanted was an Emily Giffin book with relatable characters that *don't* make me want to pull all my hair out. Alas.

PT: books that are constantly advertised to me, books with blue/purple covers (October), books recommended to me by Various Algorithms, books that are v popular in bookstores atm

WIL
1) a lesson/cautionary tale. Girls can rely on each other. And,,, other lessons.

2) The Lawyer Character. Giffin, as I just now found out, apparently went to law school!! Which explains SO much. Primarily explains why the two books of hers that I have read predominately feature a lawyer character and/or an important case of some kind. In the case of this book, it's both.

WIDL
1) Domesticity. This book is so grounded in the real world and real-people problems. Where is the fantasy! The abstraction! I read to entertain ideas that I wouldn't otherwise encounter in my daily life, and this is so depressingly similar to the reality I see everywhere else all the time. Not my thing.

2) Demonization of the expected. Overused! I'm so Tired of the Bad guy being the bad guy. Need some SUBVERSION of the typical antagonists!! Give me some VARIETY! GAHHHH OSEGIHAOIHJG.

3) Good People in Bad Situations. You know how this could be resolved? Some commUNICATION. Or some DISCERNMENT in DATING. all the signs of a bad relationship were there early on!!! I'm so Tired.

Loved the premise of the book and how it really opens up the conversation about what would you do? And who’s side would you be on?

I really wanted to love this book since I had heard a lot of great things about it from other people. Plus, All We Ever Wanted is the first Emily Giffin book that I've read since I read Heart of the Matter back when it was released in 2010. Sadly, this book failed to live up to the hype for me personally, and I simply liked it.

My rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 Stars / 7 out of 10 on my own scoring system.

... What, exactly, was the point of this book? Maybe it was intended to be realistic, a picture of what actually happens in these kinds of situations (simple, spontaneous decisions rather than introspective and commonsensical ones), but I felt that there was no true development of the events taking place, merely an accounting of them, so I was left feeling like it was contrived and poorly thought out. The "resolution" infuriated me. Show me the consequences of the characters' decisions, the parts of their lives that were forever changed because of their actions.

Nina Browning is married to a successful businessman and her son is a senior in high school who has just been accepted into Princeton University for the coming year. Tom Volpe is a divorced, single dad working multiple jobs and his daughter Lyla is everything to him. Then one mistake changes everything for Nina, Tom, and Lyla, forcing their lives together in a scandal no one ever thought possible.

Thanks to School Library Journal for a review copy of this book.

2 ⭐️: I didn’t love this, and I’m not really even sure that I liked it either. I appreciated that it moved quickly and it had me hooked enough to keep going (I needed to know how it was going to end), which is how I landed on 2 ⭐️. The ONLY likable character for me was Tom. Kirk and Finch were obviously terrible, and I kept getting so frustrated with Nina. The ending felt rushed, but the epilogue was a saving grace for sure.
