Published in 1997, I Love Dick is presented as a series of unanswered love letters written by our protagonist, Chris, & addressed to Dick, a colleague of Chris’ husband. During a dinner & weather-induced overnight stay at Dick’s house, the couple develops a strange infatuation with him, incessantly using him as a prompt in all of their writings & ultimately sending him hundreds of letters with which he is noticeably uncomfortable. These letters consisted of everything from detailed descriptions of art exhibits to studies on schizophrenia. I Love Dick has been dubbed “confessional literature” because, get this, it actually happened. Chris Kraus really became obsessed with real-life cultural critic Dick Hebdige, sent him hundreds of letters, & wrote a book about it using his actual first name. He has openly expressed his disdain for this project, calling it an invasion of his privacy. I loathe the “everything is content” school of thought SO many writers subscribe to. Hurting people for “the sake of art” isn’t art. It’s just fucking annoying.

I like the premise and execution of this book, and I appreciate the specific style the author chose to express herself with, but I can never truly get over the fact that all these characters are real people. I cant stop imagining how horrid this whole situation must have been from Dick's perspective.

Chris Kraus has a strong voice and a clear, interesting way of voicing her thoughts. The book almost feels like performance art sometimes, and that's very cool and interesting! Nevertheless it's hard to distance yourself from how odd the whole scenario is. Whenever the letters become more graphic or even threatening I cant help but worry a little. Imagine meeting someone once, getting a big box pressed into your arms a few months later, and finding that it's filled with letters upon letters directed at a strange, mental construction of you that someone made up. I guess I’d say that the book is good, but it made me a tad uncomfortable.

Also LOVED reading this on public transport.
