"I wander from room to room, climb up and down the stairs and feel like a songbird whose wings have been ripped off and who keeps hurling itself against the bars of its dark cage."
It's beautiful how a 13-15 year old can write such beautiful yet heartbreaking words. It makes you wonder if all of that magic in her was presented so young because the world knew what was to come.
There's not much I can say other than to just read it. It has a mix of adolescents and maturity. The darkness that hovers within and around Anne as she lives in the confines of the annex.
These are some more of my favorite quotes:
"Because paper has more patience than people"
"Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness."
"Crying can bring relief, as long as you don't cry alone."
"Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones because regret is stronger than gratitude."
"In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again."

I believe that Anne's choice to keep writing for Kitty during all her years in the annex was a brilliant idea. How she managed to keep us on track of what goes on day and night, what they have been going through and even what their meals contained of. I feel that her ability to write and describe it in such a way for a thirteen year old girl is brilliant. Great book.

This is probably the fifth or sixth time I've read this in my lifetime, the first time I've read one of the updated editions, though.
Still powerful. Still heartbreaking. Still a book that I think everyone should read.
