I think this book just wasn't for me. I was initially really interested based on the plot, but I ended up waffling my way through this book. I kept going back on forth on do I like it? Do I hate it? Am I bored or am I really interested?

To start, I loved the conversation. Lola's dry wit is hysterical and she has these jarring one-liners that I loved! I want a character like Lola in every book. Her personality alone gave the star-rating a huge jump. The rest of the book felt like push and pull between loving and hating. The beginning and ending were both really strong, though the ending did feel really abrupt. I felt like the book started out really captivating and I really like how everything got wrapped up at the end.

The entire middle felt like a big puddle of mush though. I get what the author was doing, but it felt a little to repetitive and it felt like it was trying a little too hard. There were some stand out aspects I liked, mostly snippets of conversations, but overall I skimmed my way through and kept putting the book down. Sometimes even in the middle of chapters. Overall, I see the intent and what the author wanted to do with the story...it just didn't do it for me.

Lola is a 30-something jaded New Yorker who happens to run into an ex in Chinatown. Then another, and another, as a parade of her maligned past affairs gravitates to her in jocular fashion. This book dishes the dirt on these relationships and its central mystery is to uncover why this is happening. I was drawn to the book because the premise sounds fun, but all I found myself asking throughout was, are straight people okay? Are white women okay? Are New York millennials okay? Cult Classic tries too hard to be New York quippy; while there are some deeply cynical jokes that stick their landing, I was too distracted by how utterly insufferable everyone in the book is. I was also baffled by Lola’s ultimate decision in the ending as she blithely accepts what I would consider unforgivable manipulation / extreme betrayal of trust.

This book held me hostage for 2 months and never hooked me. Cared more about being cool than really having any substance. Main character truly unlikeable.

Got another book that was more time sensitive to read. I’ll come back to this one.

DNF - I really tried, but couldn't get into this main character.
