This is not very elegant, but as King's oft-quoted “equivalent of a Big Mac” it works just fine. Don't expect anything out of the extraordinary, and you won't be disappointed. And that's all there is to say really – except ...

In his book How to Write a Damn Good Novel II, James N. Frey explains that there is one terrible specimen of a story that nobody wants to see: the story of the weak housewife. And then he goes on to outline exactly this novel (minus the psychopath, but that's King for you).

The fantasy ankle took me out the story. I was expecting an "overcoming domestic violence" story arc, but instead I am left confused & wanting answers. My love-hate relationship with Stephen King books has reared its ugly head once again.

Stephen King will always be a favorite author of mine. Rose Madder had a different feel than most of his books, maybe because the main character wasn't seeking revenge, trying to figure out an issue, or going on a kind of quest. She basically randomly ran away from her abusive husband one day and then tries to live a normal life. Half the scenes are written from the crazy husbands perspective, which was uncomfortable to read because he is obviously a terrible person. The paranormal element didn't feel like it fit in very well to me. It felt forced. And I am a big fan of SKs paranormal elements in most of his other books. This one just wasn't a top favorite of mine.

This book kept me pretty interested through the first portion of it but it was the last portion that really had me hooked! I read almost 200 pages in one day just because I could not put it down! I've always loved Stephen King and I love his different horror style but this book contained both Greek myths as well as his famous horror and some that was just felt like you were on an acid trip amazing!
