Queer, punk, femme, ridiculous, brash, cute, bouncy, adventurous, wild -- Kim & Kim is all of these things. Featuring a VW van that travels through time and space named Contessa, an electric guitar that is somehow also a deadly weapon, a shape-shifting octopus pre-adolescent, and what appears to be a queerplatonic relationship between the two title characters. It's a fast and fun girlpop bounty hunters in space kind of story, that is like, the opposite of dark and gritty. It's a story that doesn't take itself too seriously, and I just really enjoyed its humor and effervescence.

In a way, I think it's cool that I didn't really like Kim & Kim. That we've reached a point where I can look at a book whose cast is multi-racial, multi-sexual, and multi-gender and still think, Eh. The story isn't doing much for me." Of course, if anyone takes issue with the multi-racial, multi-sexual, multi-gender makeup of the cast, I will fight them tooth and nail, because I think it's a wonderful, necessary thing that Visaggio & Co. are doing here. It's just not a wonderful, necessary thing that I feel the need to follow devotedly.

This has the attitude of tank girl with the bubblegum-ness of Josie and the Pussycats or Jem and the Holograms in a Sci Fi setting. I liked the diversity within the comic and having a trans-person as a main character. (It's about time) I did struggle initially getting into this story. I'm not 100% sold on the plot but maybe volume 2 gets better. I recommend to get this from the library to see if it is up your alley. For me, the tank girl appeal is quite strong so I might end up putting this on my "to purchase" list in the future.
