The writing is lovely and the ladies the book focuses on are fascinating, but the nonlinear nature of this book left me puzzled. Nonlinear narratives aren't too bad with one or two characters, but more than that is a headache.

this started out pretentious but readable and fun and grew skim-worthy and confusing while still pretentious. lesbians are great obv and conceptually i support the idea of showing how this specific group of western european authors and artists poke in and out of each other's lives and politics but like. it was just annoying. especially later when there are so many characters and you're not particularly attached to any of them and can't remember who's who. like idk ig thats a skill issue but i was not invested enough to try harder. also very eurocentric. some of the vignettes were pretty fun tho!

I wanted to like this so badly, but I just can't. The only reason it's getting two stars is because I managed to finish it, and the writing is beautiful.
