I did not enjoy this one nearly as much as his previous three books. I think I enjoy the relationships and processes of the detectives themselves rather than all the exposition and back story that this book seemed to be heavy on. Took a long time to get to the detecting.

This novel is about how crime affects the lives of ordinary people. In this case, after some drug smugglers bilk two Mexican farmers who they hired to smuggle drugs, after telling them they are carrying letters, their older brother comes to Sweden to collect the money they were promised. The fates of the characters, particularly the Mexicans, are compelling.

Picked it up at random as a continuation of my love affair with Swedish crime dramas...but I still haven't found the next Steig Larsson. This one was pretty good but had a sort-of whirlwind unresolved ending. The translation was also sort of off in parts.

Book was all over the place. Introducing characters who really had 0 importance in the book. Incredibly surprising this book was written by a “great” Swedish author. Ending was fulfilling but didn’t have anything to do with the detective this series follows.

READ IN DUTCH

I saw this book in the library and as I'm always in for a new author, I thought I would give this book a try.

I was very disappointed by this book. I usually really like Scandinavian detectives, but this one wasn't working for me, unfortunately. I found the plot, if present, not really interesting and the story in itself wasn't very credible either.

I've heard though that this is considered one of his weakest novels, so perhaps I was just unlucky when choosing this book. However, I'm don't plan to read any more of his books in the near future.

I enjoyed this book. I have been reading the Ann Lindell books in order and I think this is the best so far. Against the norm this story did not have an overly gruesome crime leaving you to wait until the end to find the culprit. Here the crime was carried out in full view of the reader leaving only a few questions unanswered. This was very character driven. The ending was very good leaving a lot to your imagination.
