These Broken Stars (Part one of Starbound trilogy)

4,25 Stars!

I've been meaning to read this book for a really long time, what made me want to read this book was the cover, I found the cover of this book very gorgeous, futuristic and eye-catching which made me curious about the plot of the book.
It started out good and intriguing but then halfway through the book it became a bit dull and there's a reason behind that. I thought it was boring to see two people trying to survive in a planet they've never been, but then things odd things started happen to them and it became fantastic, I couldn't and didn't want to stop, I was at the edge of my seat especially the last maybe 15 chapters.
This book was romantic, adventureous, mysterious and very scientific.
I think both Amie and Meagan did an amazingly beautiful job writing this book, they made the readers travel inner-outer space. The story is told alternately from the point of view of these two persons Tarver a war hero and Lilac the heiress to her father's huge industry which I found great. I really loved the short conversations with Tarver within the end of every chapter. He was sarcastic and witty with his answers and I had to smile again and again.
Both protagonists made progress with their character structuring especially Lilac. They were described fantasticly, altough there were moments for me where I find the premises a bit complicating, moments that I didn't know what was happening or where they were but eventually everything became understandable while the story was continueing.

Conclusion: I loved the idea of this novel, it was very interesting and original.. Something that I've never read, however the ending was kind of a cliffhanger to me, that's why there are two mor books for this series and I can't wait to read them both.

I really enjoyed this book! It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but it was what I wanted! There were twists and turns and romance and plenty of laughing.

I was not expecting to love this as much as I did! I loved the dual narrative, and both Lilac and Tarver's voices were strong and distinguishable. I love books set in space and the aspect of the crash added a whole new dimension to the story. The writing is absolutely beautiful as well.

Don’t be fooled, These Broken Stars has incredible depth for a story with two white people reenacting The Creation of Adam on the cover. Think Lost meets Solaris wrapped up in a young adult CW channel package!

On the surface, this sounds like a formulaic YA sci-fi survival story about two kids stranded on an abandoned planet that they realise isn’t as abandoned as they’d thought. I went into it expecting a instalove, cheesy dialogue, convenient saves, and archetypes to make me roll my eyes so far back into my head that they bled. Sure, this might actually be a story about two kids stranded on an abandoned planet that they realise isn’t as abandoned as they’d thought, but it’s so much more than that.

It’s not just a case of “oh lol there are actually people on this planet” or “holy fuck, aliens!” - it’s more ethereal and creepy than that. Some of my favourite stories are those where you can’t tell what kind of story you’re reading, e.g: watching a horror movie and not being able to tell if the creepy grandmother is possessed, a monster, or just a straight up serial killer.

This story is kind of like that - I couldn’t tell if the story was presenting me with aliens, ghosts, humanoid civilisation, advanced tech, or something more psychological. If you liked constantly asking yourself “what the fuck?!” during Solaris or Lost, you will be getting your whole life during this novel! This is one of those stories that was so compelling that I was counting down the minutes till my lunchbreak so I could keep reading!

In a genre full of instalove and love triangles, Lilac and Tarver’s starcross’d romance was oddly refreshing to follow. Lilac is a redhead heiress to a terraforming corporation that rules the galaxy, while Tarver is an unlikely war hero commoner from an outer ring planet. While I wouldn’t say that they had any overly palpable chemistry, the way their relationship develops over the course of their survival story is completely believable. There’s no instant attraction between the rich girl and the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, they have a gradual and difficult progression from hate to love.

Overall: I didn’t expect much going into this novel and holy fuck was I surprised! These Broken Stars goes to show that you can’t judge a book by its cover, because this seemingly generic YA sci-fi delivered one of the most compelling mysteries I’ve read in months! The universe isn’t what it seems and it’s impossible to guess what’s around each corner, and the love story blossoms slowly and organically. Trilogies often fill me with dread, but I can’t freakin’ wait to pick up the next one!

I read this back in high school and remembered enjoying it, so I decided to revisit.

Spoilers possibly ahead:

The premise is so promising, the dynamic is so promising, the concepts are so promising but I found myself at times … I don’t know.. bored?

I really enjoyed a lot of little things but like Lilac’s death was probably the best part of the story, I thought it was so well written, and they just kind of gloss over her remembering to be dead? I just felt there was a lot more they could have explored, it felt a little hastily put together at the end.

But Tarver is a bottom and a simp for Lilac and that’s pussy babes, that’s all.

I'm not a huge fan of romance but it was such a good plot and idea behind the story. I wish the circumstances were a bit different for Lilac and Tarver, but because of the incident you really got to see them develop. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
