Jade stays with you long after you put the book down.

I was not the right audience for this one. I like horror books, but do not like slasher movies, and this book is a love letter to slasher movies. So I found myself losing interest frequently during it.

I picked this up without knowing anything about it other than seeing mixed reviews on goodreads and youtube. I was very suprised at how much I liked this. I think if I had to say what I did not like about it, would be the ending was a little off for me. This wasn't enough to steer me away from 5 stars, but I wish it had stayed in the.....expected route?
Without spoiling too much, I just wanna say, I wanted there to be a specific killer, and there was not...also the very ending did not really go anywhere...I expected some type of...climax or catharsis? idk, Just wanted more out of the ending is all.
Overall I loved it, the girl I purchased the book from made me unsure of my purchase, but I am glad I gave it a shot and went for it anyways! Will be picking up more of SGJ work in the future!

My god this was tedious. The writing was amateurish, slow, and uninteresting up to and including the ending that you have to work to get to. Countless missed opportunities along the way to make the boring characters more engaging and instead a lot of superfluous connections that were never really explored. Just terrible.

The main character is so one-dimensional that she HAS to reference slasher movies in every single interaction because hey! she likes slasher movies and we apparently need to be reminded of that every other sentence. Look, I get that you should reinforce a character’s personality in your writing, but when they have only one trait, they come off as (again) tediously obsessive and the writing just really bad. But this book is so badly written that Jade’s one dimension is one more than every other character in the book. Holy hell they are all uninteresting.

Also, can these amateur authors stop referencing successful creators like Agatha Christie and all the horror movie producers this book name-dropped. I’ve read several the past year that do this. You’re not on their level and your homage reads more like a desperate attempt to be included in the circle of good creatives, of which you are not one.

Way too much “appetizer” before getting to the “main course.”

Another winner. CHAINSAW starts with a not-unfamiliar prologue and slow burns its way to a ridiculously satisfying blood-soaked finale in an aquatic ad hoc “drive in.” The novel manages to embrace and celebrate all (I think he got all of them) of the cliches and tropes of slasher horror while turning them all inside out at the same time. This was my third go-round with SGJ, and he has yet to disappoint.

I made it about 30% and I wanted someone to cut me in half with a chainsaw. My head hurts from being so annoyed with this main character, she is more annoying than 20 children hyped up on sugar trying to tell you 20 different stories.

What, and I mean this in the best possible way, the hell did I just read? This is my first goodreads review in a million books because my mind is that blown. This is the kind of book that makes me want to sit down and start writing and not stop.

What a rollercoaster! Very entertaining and excellent throwback to classic horror (slashers), it gave off all different vibes, and the main character was great to read, however the ending was disappointing to me, however I understand the analogy (if there is one), I would of loved if the relationship between the main and the final girl was developed more, perhaps it did...if Jade survived the end.
