Have you ever watched a movie or read a book over and over again, and wished you could forget what happens to enjoy it for the first time again?

The "From a Certain Point of View" strikes back. This series is based around the unique concept of rediscovering classic stories through the eyes of bystanders. After the first book in the series "From a Certain Point of View: A New Hope" took us through the first Star Wars movie of the original Trilogy, this novel takes us through the plot of the second movie "The Empire Strikes Back", a great movie, with perhaps one of the greatest plot twists in movie history. I enjoyed every short-story from the first novel, and this new collection did just as much.

You discover through this novel that secondary characters, or even just background characters, have a story, a life, motivations and perhaps a different point of view on the events happening in the galaxy.

Highly recommend. I enjoyed the first novel, loved the second and can't wait for the third (unannounced, probable release in 2023) in the series of "From a Certain Point of View".

Loved it! Some of my favorite fantasy/sci-fi writers and an original concept.
Even if I'm a not a huge fan of Start Wars I loved how this stories tells a part of the saga according to the different authors.
Not all the stories are at the same level but it was an enjoyable and gripping read.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

While this collection was , on the whole, better than the previous collection, it suffered from some of the same problems I had with the first. I noticed that multiple authors used the same minor characters but their personality changed or their story did away with what a previous author did to a character. I also noticed that a few times the timeline of the stories jumped backwards in time. Since the stories in these collections are meant to be told in sequence based on the movie’s timeline it was a bit jarring. My final problem with this collection is it leans way too hard into the villain doubting/betraying their beliefs trope. Almost every POV from a villain turns into them doubting or full on betraying the Empire. That trope doesn’t make sense to me since all of these POVs are from Empire Strikes Back which is a movie where the bad guys win. Again, I believe this is a problem with the editor of the book and not a problem with the authors.

There are some big names writing in this collection. My favorite stories were told by SA Chakraborty and Alexander Freed. Most of the stories were good with only 1 that I skipped after a few pages.

As many Short story collections the quality of the stories can vary quite a bit. However I found that most the stories are fine and some like No Time for Poetry and There Is Always Another are quite amazing. However if there is another book like this I hope they mix the order of stories a bit around as 9-10 stories set on Hoth coming after each other got a bit tiresome.

This is about exactly what you would expect from the premise, which is simply taking background characters and small moments from The Empire Strikes Back and fleshing them out into short stories. Have you ever wanted to see the scene between Luke and the medical droid fixing his arm that must have occurred before the scene in the movie actually starts? Do you want to know what the citizens of Cloud City thought about the Empire's occupation of it? Would you like to get inside the head of the wampa that captured Like on Hoth? This book is for you.

It was generally pretty fun. Having a whole bunch of different authors (and narrators in the audiobook) made for a good variety of stories told from different points of views from both rebel and empire characters all the way to animals like the aforementioned wampa, the tauntauns on Hoth, and that big monster on the asteroid whose mouth the Millennium Falcon flies into. It wasn't quite as drastically varied in tone and style as I would have liked, it all feels of a piece of the movie, but it was still fun.

There are some drawbacks to having these all as completely disconnected sorry stories though. They are presented chronologically in line with the movie, so the conditions on Hoth are described in detail at least a half dozen times. Same with Han and Leia's open secret romance dynamic. There are FOUR stories that prominently featured the scene where Vader force choke kills that one Admiral while video conferencing with him early in the movie. Some of it just stuck out strangely reading these all back to back.

Still I liked this well enough and there's something fun, though cheesey, about realizing when a scene from the story starts to become a scene that was in the movie and recognizing specific lines and whatnot. There is another book like this about A New Hope, so I'll probably get around to that eventually as well (I just listened to this one first because it was available sooner via the library).

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publishers for giving me a digital copy to review!

I had the first one on my list and still haven't gotten around to it but saw my fave author did a story in this one so I skipped ahead lol.

I'm gonna try to rate this story by story as I go so we'll see how that turns out.
