There’s just something about Alice Osman’s writing style that I really like. Most of her books have this easy YA vibe, but the representation she includes gives the book more depth in my perspective. I was born for this was no exception, even though the representation could feel a bit superficial at points. It’s refreshing that a character can be queer (for instance) without it being the main plot, but I also wanted to get to know the characters on a deeper level and see more of how their identities had affected them in their current lives.
I found the “fangirl” trope entertaining and it reminded me of my younger fandom days. The changing perspectives offered more neunance to the story and efficiently showed the good and bad sides of fandoms.
My main issue is that I can’t decide if I liked the ending or not. As I was getting close to the end I worried about how everything could be resolved with so few pages left. Which ended with some issues getting resolved rather quickly and felt a bit rushed, while others were left open. A part of me enjoyed the somewhat open ending, but another part of me really needed to know more and has been bothered by this for days.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and look forward to reading more of Osman’s books.

Well that was great, read it in a day, couldn’t put it down. It wasn’t what I expected, I didn’t really know what to expect and considering I didn’t really connect with any of the characters situations I was surprised by how invested I became, but saying this, whilst we aren’t all super fans or famous musicians, the struggles they go through at the heart of things are definitely relatable.

“In an otherwise mediocre existence, we chose to feel passion.”
― Alice Oseman, I Was Born for This

'It's a funny old world,' he says.
I look at the girls and start waving too. Sending love through the turn of a hand.
