This book is just American Psycho’s sister, British Photographer. I’m not mad about it, but I don’t think that this is any more disturbing or dark than that. The book doesn’t really “go” anywhere, but that’s kind of the point by the end. It feels wrong to call this book “fun” when it has some genuinely distressing content and themes, but frankly, I don’t know if I totally consider this to be a horror novel—if anything, it’s a character study of an incredibly unreliable narrator who’s (possibly? probably?) done some really dark things and had equally horrible things happen to her, and while the stuff is horrific, I personally never felt like my pulse was “racing” in the way one might associate with a psychological thriller. Even so, I mostly enjoyed this book, though it really significantly picks up in the second half.

I really enjoyed this book! I'm personally a big fan of stories about terrible people constantly stumbling against one another, and that what this book is. Irina is a complicated person, but she is also an Awful person and the first chapter of this book does a very very good job at situating it and making it clear. It is a very uncomfortable read though, and I would definitely take a look at the content warnings before picking this book up.
Also, and this might be a bit pejorative but I genuinely think it's well executed and a very good take on the ideas and how their adapted to suit this story, but it's like if the movie American Psycho was about a lower middle class English queer woman kink artist.

Where to even start with this. The writing style fluctuated so much during this book, it seemed more like the author’s stream of consciousness than anything else. I think my biggest problem with this book was that there was no plot at all, no cohesive writing style and voice from the author, and nothing connected. It seems that the idea was there but it could not be executed by the author.

I really didn’t enjoy how much the main character focused on food, her eating disorder, and not eating when this was in no way related to the plot. It might have shaped the character but this was all she talked about, there wasn’t much else to Irina.

The contact sexual assault and rape in this book were trying to be nuanced but just fell so flat for me. It seemed like the author was just writing off these things as “it happens” and nothing comes of it when a victim speaks out.

Overall, there’s more to say but I would not recommend this book!

Read very quickly. Very disturbing and at times hard to read. I liked the ending. Not something I would necessarily recommend but I think that's mainly because I didn't think the writing was particularly good, even though the plot was somewhat entertaining.

This is, and I do not say this lightly, the single most terrifying book I've ever read — if only because I caught myself mid-laugh gasping in horror.
