Cute, fast read and it was just fun. I just wanted more steam from the Graham and Zoey.

I just couldn’t bring myself to finish this book. I was really excited for it because I love a good small town romance set in a pretty place. Unfortunately the characters just weren’t very likable, in fact were a bit obnoxious, and the story was moving very slowly.

The good: I LOVE books set in Alaska. I loved the environment and the small town setting in this book. You get a real feel for the townie vs tourist mindset that I grew up with, so I really connected with that. I also really love how Zoey does NOT let men push her around. When you think someone is going to do something offensive, she actually stands up for herself which is REFRESHING IN CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE. There was also a lot of cute animal stuff happening - blind dog, moose falling in love with a pickup truck, etc.

The bad: Graham is toted as a grumpy character who is hard to win over, but he more or less falls head over heels for Zoey in the first 40 pages. There is no slowly falling for her, he immediately starts calling her cute nicknames (Zoey Bear and Zo) even though she seems only mildly interested at first. I wish there was some more leadup to Graham falling for Zoey, but unfortunately he blinks and he more or less wants her to marry him.

Overall, this book also has the predictable ending one would expect. I think if you are looking for a relatively predictable romance book set in Alaska, this is it. It was light-hearted and sweet, I just wish it hadn't gone straight from strangers to soul mates haha

I hesitated to read this because of all the lukewarm reviews, but ended up liking it a bit more than I expected. The setup is cute and there were parts that were funny and charming, but other parts that just did not work (for a variety of reasons). And it was too long - the author, or an editor, needed to get rid of some of the excess. It would have more momentum (and be a better book) if some of the awkward scenes had been eliminated.

This is sooooo over the top, but if you elect to enjoy it like a cheesy Hallmark Christmas romcom, it's decently entertaining. It's full of ridiculous archetypes including a ~*cringey quirky bookworm*~ heroine and cartoon villain rich people, but there are some endearing grumpy bearded men and a sweet dog to balance it out too.

I wish I'd known this was fade to black before going in though, the couple took the entire damn book to get together properly and we didn't get to see shit!

I also wish this book had handled the local/tourist divide and rich people commentary a lot better. There are some rich people who behave TERRIBLY in this book, including a side character drugging her best friend but these elements are never handled with much nuance. The characters either punch it out or just try to move on without a proper apology. Umm no???? Your friend is toxic and you need to end that shit????

This town was super cute in a Gilmore Girls-but-in-the mountains way, but I don't know that I'm intrigued enough to read on in the series.
