While the story was a fun twist on the classic we all know, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style, I didn’t particularly like the characters, and the version that I was provided with was incredibly frustrating to follow. So maybe that’s not the book’s fault, and this is more of a compatibility issue, but I just didn’t enjoy reading this.

Lovers of fairy tale retellings should definitely give this book a try though!

'Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?'

Snow White has always been one of my favourites and I went into this not knowing what to expect. I really enjoyed it. Snow is made into the heroine of the story and will stop at nothing to help the kingdom. I liked the back stories on her father and also how Ingrid came to be the 'Evil Queen'.

If ever there was a Disney princess who deserved a twist wherein she was the one taking agency, it's poor ol' Snow White. I was happy to see her get to be the one taking up the mantle of rescuer of her prince/kingdom under siege by her stepmother. Unfortunately, the lack of much actual stuff to draw from made this story harder to twist, it seems.

Snow White herself, though far braver (or rather, more capable of demonstrating that bravery, since she's not asleep for the climactic parts of the story) than her movie predecessor, is still pretty hopelessly naive in terms of being an actual, capable leader. Her speech to the townsfolk to convince them to rebel was flat and weak and weirdly pro-monarchy (in a "I will prevail" because of course the good and right and just aka the ones divinely ordained to rule aka me and my blessed saint of a mother). It almost felt like an attempt at bridging this Snow with the one from the ABC show Once Upon A Time, which I'm pretty sure Disney owns. Having her reconnect with her spell maddened father was a moment of growth for her, though not one I felt was taken full advantage of, but her relationship with the prince (blessedly not named Florian in this version of the story) was pretty strong, and I'm glad she ended up being the one saving him in the end.

I was a little confused by the dwarves, because I'd always assumed they were the fantasy species sort and not actual men with Dwarfism in the film, but their relationship to the magic fearing townsfolk would make it seem that the opposite is true.

We spend a lot of time with the Evil Queen, not justifying her actions but explaining why she is as she is (her origin story, if you will), and I found that and the weird, pseudo-parasitic relationship she had with her mirror to be the most compelling dynamic and element of the story overall. It's the element of the twisted tale I was most interested in, particularly the deteriorating, codependent relationship she had with Snow's mom/her sister. The tragedy of the Evil Queen really swept the floor with Snow's side of things.

I liked this one a lot although it was a bit dark and sad but overall really good.

Not too much of it was changed except for the very end. Loved the evil queen’s backstory though. A little annoying that basic details of the story were changed, which is out of the ordinary for this series but still very good overall
