Detective Henlon is takes some time away from work as a cop because she has been using too much violence in her work. She goes on vacation to a quiet place, yet ends up in an investigation when she feels something is amiss. Henlon has a tendency to violence. I didn't feel any connection to her and some parts felt repetitive. Which is why this was only a 3 star rate for me. There is a lot of action and the plot was interesting enough.

My 6P review

Hanlon isn’t your average cop. She has a tendency towards violence and has been suspended from the force as a result. She takes her leave on the island of Jura in Scotland where she just can’t stay away from trouble.

I liked Hanlon. She was gritty, strong and didn’t hold back. I took an instant dislike to her but warmed to her as the story progressed. Perhaps she mellowed just a bit. She did seem to have super human strength at times which made me question her abilities even though we were told often enough that she was super fit. The other characters in the story were well fleshed out and greatly added to the story.

The setting was stunning and somewhere now on my bucket list to visit.

The plot was very interesting and the story flowed easily. It was well thought out with many plot twists throughout. I did think it was a stretch for the police to overlook a lot of the activities on the island but maybe that’s because everybody knows each other.

It was an easy read mainly from the POV of Hanlon who was a good narrator.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what Hanlon does next. I’m looking forward to reading the second in the series.

First in the series. Good introduction to the various characters. Enjoyed the Jura setting, as seen from a visitor. Definitely showed the underside of life, especially the violence. I’ll be interested to see how the series progresses

It is amazing to me that I keep finding so many good detective series out of the UK. So far they have all been great, this one is no exception.
