A classic Hellboy story, to be sure. Hellboy is wandering about, gets into supernatural trouble, and then wisecracks his way into solving said problem. Gianni's artwork is as evocative as ever, and is a fitting choice for a Hellboy story, considering he made his name illustrating characters and stories that inspired Mignola in his creation of Hellboy and the 'Mignolaverse' as fans like to call it. I only wish that Mignola acquired the services of Gianni more, as he is a rather natural fit for the Hellboy canon. But oh well, a man can only dream...

Even a meh Hellboy story is great by other story's standards. What sets this apart as its own is the beautiful art by Gary Gianni. The story itself is not breaking any new ground, but very solid from start to finish.

When Hellboy left the B.R.P.D. he wondered the world for a while. This is part of his journey after he got swept into the sea.
This was an interesting story for Hellboy. Since leaving the B.R.P.D. he has been pushed from one deadly encounter to another. After he finally washed up, he finds himself a captive on a merchant ship from the past. Hellboy just can’t get a break and we see him spending some time with the dead again. I love how many times he ends up hanging out with dead people throughout these comics.
Overall, this was a good story. I liked Gianni’s drawing style but still prefer Fegredo, Mignola, and Arcudi’s styles for this world.

If you’re any sort of a Hellboy fan, this book will leave you confused, unsatisfied, wondering what you got wrong, calling your mom crying, etc. While it’s rare (very rare) that I don’t thoroughly enjoy anything in the Hellboy universe Mignola puts out, that rarity works against him here to really highlight the flaws. Gianni’s art is just ok. The story is color by numbers:
Hellboy is captured. Victorian-era science. Zombies. Allusions to classic literature. God-serpents. Hit things with giant hand.
There’s a lot that went wrong. Did anything go right? Seeing Hellboy wither into a skeleton was kinda cool. The Incan mummy talking through a gramophone was neat. It’s just a case of the bad outweighing the good.

This was my least favorite Hellboy story, which is either saying a lot or nothing at all, because I still very much enjoyed it. I've never read a bad Hellboy story. This just had the least to offer, even in its scatterbrained delirium. Whether Hellboy's after something or just wandering the Earth, his very presence is alluring. Trouble finds him and he's one of the best balances of furious reaction and tranquil core. Usually, there's a small piece of him revealed in a story of his wandering the Earth. But here, it just felt like style over substance. Never really felt that before with Hellboy.
