I liked this book, good solid read and a fresh perspective on pregnancy, and some intricate details on what it's like to be in labor with complications as well as some common inevitable reverberations on the body, mind, relationships, and the new interactions that arise. It also points out important gross overlooks by some cultural scenarios, common sense, and toxic preconceived notions that are forced upon a pregnant person. It brings up very important topics of conversation that need to be openly discussed a lot more frequently in our society. It is not however instructional nor will it go through trimesters and week-by-week type of information regarding pregnancy, this is more of a hit topic book to raise awareness upon important issues in our society. I particularly liked the chapter that goes through the perspective of pregnant people that are cis, transgender, or identify themselves as non-binary. It's again of fundamental importance to raise awareness and voice different perspectives regarding this pregnancy in its many forms that is presented.

1. We should all have more resepct for women and especially mothers than we do. This is not a new thought for me, but holy fuck this book.
2. This country 100% hates women. Also not a new thought for me, but sad that in 2024 it's still so true.

Made me cry with the intensity of it in places. Beautiful look at pregnancy and birth and all the ways the U.S. could do both better.

This one gets five stars because in addition to writing with truly astonishing clarity about the scientific and cultural impact of pregnancy and birth, Garbes also made me cry at least once a chapter with her gorgeous, gnarly descriptions of becoming a parent. Oof!

Lots to learn
Wow, I didn't know at least 80% of the details in this book and am blown away. Every person should read this to get an understanding of how amazing reproduction is and the bodies that do the work. I enjoyed and could feel the author's awe for her own body and other's pregnant bodies.
