*insert guttural sigh here*

Listen. The atmosphere of this book was top notch. Beginning of fall, cabin in the woods.... But ultimately there were too many wrong turns/rabbit trails/red herrings on the way to a reveal that I HATED. Finished the book before bed and woke up thinking about this, still upset! This was like peeling off those annoying banana strings and then the banana within is mushy! (Yes I had a banana with breakfast.) I have been advised that book 6 should be consumed posthaste and addresses some of the issues here. So, onto book 6. But I'm annoyed, Louise!! I'm annoyed.

Penny has an incredible way of combining humor and darkness in her stories. I am always struck by the way that there are multiple plausible suspects for her murders, because every character is complicated and has some emotion festering in them. You'll want to jump right into book 6 after this one, though I did wait a bit.

So many murders for such a quaint, peaceful village. I forget if it's ever mentioned, but it feels like the town has a population of 20 people max. And I only know who the first 10 are- I've just doubled it to be generous.

I didn't see this one coming. Not that I've predicted a Louise Penny so far, but still. I can't even elaborate because spoilers. I'm just a little stunned and I don't know if in a good or a bad way. Is that it? Is this an arc?

What's up with the weird race references though? 2009 wasn't that long ago.

I wish I could put into words why I think this series is so good.  It's more than just the solving of a mystery.  It's about relationships, the culture and history of Quebec and Canada, and the reflective mind of Armand Gamache.  This particular story will stay with me for a while.

Well, I think this might be my favourite Gamache novel so far. The characters are brilliant: fallible human beings - no one is 100% good or 100% bad. The story is so well crafted and kept me guessing, hoping and caring to the end.
