Us is a memoir of the relationship between the author and her partner Diana as Diana comes out as a trans woman. It is a mix of their personal story, and more general informative sections that address the reader directly. One of my favourite aspects of this book was the way it made use of the soft pastel colours of the trans flag to great effect. I loved the increasing use of pink as Diana progressed further in her transition and the use of white for transphobes, who tried to suck all the joy (and colour) from others. I really appreciated the author's honesty in sharing her concerns and fears about what Diana's transition might mean for her, but would have loved to hear more from Diana, especially in the early part of the book, when she first raised the idea that she might be a woman. This is a gentle, reassuring, and non-threatening introduction; a sweet and gentle look at the way people and a relationship can grow and evolve, despite the challenges, to encompass and lovingly embrace a new truth.

This memoir gave me lots of things to think about when it comes to gender roles and how they hurt everyone (not just Trans people) when they are upheld for too long. 

I would have liked for the author's partner, Diana, to have had a more active role in writing this memoir.

Us is a graphic memoir that focuses on Sara Soler’s relationship with her partner, Diana, who is a trans woman, and how they navigated the reactions that people had about Diana’s transitioning. While Soler herself isn’t trans, she takes care to focus on her partner’s experiences, and the good and bad of how people reacted. Relatedly, I appreciated that Soler disclosed her initial reactions to Diana being trans, which weren’t especially negative per se, but they weren’t necessarily the greatest either. I do think it takes some courage to be that honest, and I like that she took time to reflect on this and understand how she needs to improve.

That being said, Us really read more like a guide for cisgender people on how not to react to people coming out as transgender. While Soler did place focus on Diana’s experiences (and, of course, their relationship), the whole graphic memoir still read very much like it was coming from a cisgender person and how they’re understanding the trans identity. It didn’t quite rub me the wrong way, but I felt like it would have been better to have gotten Diana’s actual perspective.

It’s clear that a lot of love went into this graphic memoir, and I’m certainly glad that Soler was and continues to be an incredibly supportive partner for Diana. I just think I wasn’t the target audience, especially because this graphic novel definitely had more of an educational slant to it than I expected.

I loved this story! As a trans person, the anecdotes were so relatable. The art and colors are also really cute.

The art style was very pretty, I really liked it a lot! The characters were very expressive which is always a win in my book. This book was very informative, it was nice reading about another trans person's experiences (made me feel less alone). I highly recommend to anyone who is curious or wishes to learn more about the topic.
