Not a ton of plot, but the writing style is so endearing in a well-meaning, salt-of-the-earth, blue-collar way that it was largely a really enjoyable read. Had to power through a good bit when our narrator was actively in Iraq because it used a lot of war jargon that I didn't understand but it picked right back up once he left. I have so much appreciation for the context that this book was written in, its a fascinating story.

Not the type of book I usually reach for, which made Cherry a refreshing change of pace for me. I found by the end of it I preferred the first half to the second half of the novel. The first half was a microcosm of 2000s culture and a scathing look at military life during that time. The second half dragged a bit. I thought the bank robbery aspect would be more fast paced but I suppose nothing is really fast paced when your main character is on heroin.

audiobook: unfinished at about 1/3 of the way through. I did not care abt where the story was going and what was happening at all.

I didn’t love this book. But I *believed* this book, and that says more about the writing and the story than wether I enjoyed the subject.

Maybe I shouldn’t have read this immediately after Largesse of the Sea Maiden, but I couldn’t help but come away thinking that Nico Walker:Denis Johnson::Greta Van Fleet:Led Zeppelin.

This book is super graphic and vulgar, but it sheds a light in some issues that were real and terrifying after the war. It was super interesting and I couldn’t stop reading it!
