A great page turner that really captured my attention with each different story. The authors do great work to capture each story in a way that feels objective as far as it can go. Their commentary on each case provides a good prespective on the respective individuals in each story.

While I'm not a believer in possession I'll read any damn book about the subject. The stories were fun, like ghost stories. But where this book really lost it was in the appendices. In the discussion about witch trials, the authors explained how the women on trial were wise women and midwives and women who were followers of the old religion. Yeah, that super outdated theory about paganism surviving in an unbroken line that is so full of crap. The witch trials were so much more complex than that and the fact they used such an outdated and simplistic theory absolutely calls into question everything in the book.

This book receives two stars because the tales of exorcisms--which compose most of the book--are indeed entertaining. The historical research, however, is poorly footnoted and, in some places, flat-out wrong. If you do read this book, skip straight to the exorcism stories, and forgo the introduction and concluding sections. You won't learn anything that you couldn't have made up yourself.
