This is a very slow moving book, which at times I found difficult to continue reading. I think this says more about that state of mind I have been in than the book though. It definitely made me think a lot and I believe it will continue to make me think now that I’m done so all in all I feel positively about it.
I don’t generally like stories told through correspondence, I find it limiting, which I think was part of my struggle with this book. Though I will say that I think the ways in which it is limiting actually worked well for this book and were intentional.

Time of death 22%.
I was looking for light, fluffy, escapsim and this book was recommended to me. Instead it was a cleverly disguised history lesson about Iron Age life. Which is fine, just not what I am looking for at this point.
The book is written as letters back and forth between the Danish museum curator and an English farmwife. I just coudn't believe people would write such details as a spouse's childhood memories by the sea in letters to strangers, (How would he know these things?) so I think I might have liked it better if it were written as a traditional narrative.

This one grew on me. I was excited to read it from the description, as I love epistolary books. It’s not a long novel in its pre-release ebook format, but it still took me a little bit to latch on. However I enjoyed it more and more as the characters unfurled like ferns in the warm sun. I enjoyed the back and forth of the two characters so much, I could see myself in both of them. I would give it more than 3 but not quite 4...since I can’t do that, I will round up. Give it a minute and let the story cascade over you. As the two characters learn about each other and themselves, you may just find self discovery in you.

Characters like these, with their clear and careful thoughts, are a pleasure to spend time with. A novel like this, with its gentle tone, makes it easier to look at some of the painful ways that people can be unclear, and careless.
The end felt a little rushed, with some points left unexamined that I think would have been closely considered earlier in the book. There isn't the sense some short novels give, of everything included precisely and nothing left out. Instead I'm left with a feeling that a sequel would have to pick up a couple of chapters before the end of this book, and deal with the questions left hanging.
Leaving anything hanging seemed out of character. Still, what was done, was done well enough to merit four stars, easily.

It was a fantastic book. It was beautifully written and had a creative and meaningful message. It was truly everything you could ask for in this kind of book. My only issue is that I don't think I read it at the right point in my life. I will have to come back and reread it when I am a bit older and wiser, but the lesson still resonated with me anyway.

Well this was unexpectedly wonderful! I’ve always enjoyed stories told through letters (84 Charing Cross Road!). This was quiet and slow and thoughtful. Watching two people, separated by an ocean, meet & get to know each other, and become good friends, all through their letters... that they’re both in late middle age made it even better.
Hard to believe this is the author’s first book! So well written!
Highly recommended. I’ll real more by this author
PS the synopsis of this book uses the wrong name! He is Anders not Tristian!
