Poems in the Attic by Nikki Grimes, published in 2015. Age Level: 2nd-4th grade. Poems in the Attic is a collection of poems about a girl that stumbles across her mother's old keepsakes from her childhood. As she looks through them, she is brought back to the time that her mother was traveling around the world with her father, who was in the air force. These experiences remind her of the light that her mother was, as she reflects on her family history. I think that I could use this book as a group read aloud experience for my students whilst we are talking about different parts of the world and how they are different from each other. This book touches on those characteristics while also maintaining student interest.

Nikki Grimes as penned an excellent book of poetry that explores military life through the eyes of the children of enlisted men and women. The narrator of the story is the daughter of a "military brat" who finds a collection of her mother's childhood poems. The past is brought into sharper focus as this daughter attempts to mimic some of the experiences her mother had as a child. This book also contains an author's note and an brief primer on the different types of poetry used in the book. This is a great story for children who are interested in writing poetry, have some experience with moving frequently, or, children who like picture books.

So lovely. Love how it connects generations across time and is focused on building and sharing memories. Poems and illustrations are simple and direct.

Beautifully illustrated. Heart-warming poems centered around family and rekindled history. Great read for bedtime and especially when missing loved ones. Lee & Low Books with Nikki Grimes takes a military family's lonely memories and make them beautiful for the next generation.
