Some of what the author said about being half Korean/half American resonated with me, although I’m half American half Czech. I often feel lost in my heritage language and culture as well, dismayed when people switch to English to explain things to me, and often expecting others to tell me that I am “enough” to fit in.
It was also nice to recognize the names of Korean foods I’ve learned to cook, and understand a lot of the Korean phrases used throughout the book.

I found the perspective and flashbacks a bit choppy at the start - it was hard to get into as Zauner jumped between times from one paragraph to the next. However, as the book progresses, I found no longer to be the case.
She has a such a unique voice and I loved her ability to capture such immense grief and also occasionally break the tension with a line that was so completely relatable I had to laugh.
Striking vignettes (crying in h mart, singing in Vietnam)
Motif and symbols (kimchi fridge full of photographs)

I'm not familiar with the author's music, so that didn't influence me at all. It was sad and makes me want to cherish my mom, a cancer survivor, all the more! Wish I could relate to all the food stories, but I still have yet to try kimchi (my sister thinks it will be too spicy for me).
