There is, in fact, no heist in this heist book.

A fun romp, but I didn't connect with it more than that.

I had such high hopes for this book but it just fell flat 😔 I sped through the last ~1-2 hours on 1.25x speed just because I didn’t want this to be my first logged book of 2019.

I will say this though: it would have made a FANTASTIC movie. I would’ve loved the hell out of The Disasters - The Movie. Bi male main character? Check. Good trans rep? Check. Adventure? Space? Explosions? Check, check, check.

But as a book it felt … not solid? Too flimsy? NOT GOOD ENOUGH?

such a fun book!! i loved the characters so much, their dynamics were fun to read about and the book flew by so quickly
I LOVE that they all got to be a crew, no longer needing the approval of the academy, off to do their own thing :)

Such a good story!

I really think the characters carry more of the story then the plot. I actually found the plot to be kind of silly even though it was pretty well planned and made sense. It kind of felt like these bad guys were just pulled out of thin air and the team knew right away that these were them and there was no other possible options. I think if there had been more of a build up to the discovery of the bad guys, I would've believed it more.

While I found the plot to be a little weak, I still really, really enjoyed it. I loved the characters so much and I loved how everyone came from a different background and had different things to deal with. This book has rep for bi and other queer sexualities, transgender, anxiety, panic attacks, the Muslim religion, and different nationalities. There was like maybe two or three white people in this whole book and one of them is of Russian descent and is from Kazakhstan. Everyone had a different background. The only American is of Pakistani descent, two of the other main characters from the Academy are black and the girl was noted to have natural hair, and one girl wears a hijab and left to do her prayers during a scene. There were also several bilingual characters and one woman who could not speak English. I just really enjoy when books are diverse. It feels more natural to me.

I really like Nax as a main character. I haven't read too many books with Jocks as the main POV, but I really enjoyed it. People who want to be pilots tend to be jocks, so it worked out pretty well. I also like how Nax just assumed people hated him when he screwed up, cause I did that too. He is also the bi character and it was fun to see a love triangle involving a guy who is liking both a girl and a boy. While these crushes are mentioned quite a bit, romance is not part of the story. But these characters become a found family and I love it.

I also really like the technology in this world. There's a lot of new stuff like new worlds and spaceflight and stuff along with older tech like car keys and regular old guns.

There was also a scene with scrambled eggs and it made me want scrambled eggs, but I have no eggs and I have to wait to get breakfast food until my birthday.

For my Sci-Fi reading challenge: Interstellar Dust - LGBTQIA+ Rep
But could also work for Moon, Solar System, Spaceship, Space Station, and Tarraformed Planet.

THE DISASTERS was a fun, action-packed sci-fi adventure. There were just a couple of things that let it down for me. Firstly, I would have liked to have had other POVs other than just Nax because I felt, especially with how quickly the plot progressed, that we didn't really get to know the others all that well. Secondly, whilst I do appreciate a good, fast-paced book, this left me kind of breathless it was so quick. I just felt it was all over too fast and wrapped up a little too nicely. There were some good group dynamics, though, I would agree with the sentiment that it's got a bit of a Firefly feel, and some pretty neat space battles too. There was a lot of casual diversity which I enjoyed and appreciated - Nax, our narrator, is a Pakistani-American and also bisexual, Asra is a practicing Muslim and wears a hijab, Rion is black and gay, Case is black and has anxiety, and Zee is trans. Full review to come.
