Okay I loved this book, so far my fave in the Hathaways series! Harry Rutledge is MY MAN - he's harsh and has zero connection to his emotions and he's commanding and he's basically perfect. I could fix him. I also loved Poppy - her natural optimism is the perfect balance for Harry and her desire to help him find his whole self and heal his childhood trauma is SO pure. My only real complaints about this book are that we spent too long with Harry and Poppy emotionally ruining each others lives and I would have preferred to spend a touch more time in the reconciliation/relationship building era, and that the final external conflict feels VERY rushed. But it can't be a LK book without a moment of mortal peril so! I accept it!

This book could be an effective standard alone if you're a big historical romance fan and you've never read a Kleypas. BUT it's not a good first histrom- there's some stuff in here that rly only works if you're very familiar with the genre (mainly, a moment of somewhat questionable consent depending on the perspective of the characters).

It's worth a read and I generally love this series. You're going to hate Harry for most of the book, and honestly, I'm still not sure I agree with the implicit message that it was worth it in the end for Poppy. But holy sh*t, does Harry have character development, once you understand towards the end why he is the way he is.

After rereading: I still really loved this book. Harry’s character is a total change of pace for the series. He’s very dark and unapologetic about his villainy. Something about it didn’t feel like all the way 5⭐️ though so I rated 4.5⭐️
Original review: 5⭐️ I can’t get enough of the Hathaways. I absolutely loved this! Poppy’s character was so fun.

I will not be continuing this series.
It was appallingly bad, especially the characters that, despite people’s belief, the main male character us absolutely not a morally grey character. The term is very beloved in book communities (BookTok, BookTube, ecc.) and it’s often misinterpreted by readers. But, just because the author explains why a character acts as heinously as they do, that still doesn’t give them a right to continue acting heinously and doesn’t make them morally grey. It just makes them an asshole.

I don’t want this to become long winded, so, I would just recommend skipping the Hathaway’s series as it’s not Kleypas’ strongest writing.

4,75 maybe 5 because I didn’t like how manipulative Harry was in the beginning.

Very hot.
“make it wet”

Amazing character growth. Poppy was so sweet but come on girl wanting to talk to blank after you married Harry was a bit dumb, besides that I really liked her. I loved them as a couple when they really started to know each other. I like how Harry truly liked Poppy’s intelligence and wasn’t afraid of it nor her beauty.

I hadn’t realized this series was the one that started with Cam Rohan aka Evie’s friend in the devil in winter and the guy who kissed Daisy. From what I saw of him and Amelia’s relationship it was very cute.

The plot was good too. OH almost forgot to say that I loved that Harry listened to Poppy in both the just listening way and in not doing business with people who will hurt others.
