The epilogue got me with his wife telling the story of how he loved and died. You could tell in his writing he was being somewhat clinical and objective but there was much to this man. What a loss. The poetry got me too

such a powerful & profound story. the epilogue to finish the book written by his wife made my heart swell. this was so special & wild to read the story of and written by a neurosurgeon who ultimately died due to the very illnesses he studied and worked with…it’s beyond. I appreciated the ways Kalanithi described his duty and the role of a doctor in a patient relationship. The ways he described his own learning of needing to slow down when the nature of the role is so go go go. I hope other practitioners can take notes in regard to patient care. Im so glad Kalanithi was able to share his story truly just so wild and special

It was difficult for me to follow due to its heavy use of medical jargon and complex language. As someone without a medical background, I found the writing tedious and unclear, especially in expressing the author’s views on life and death. I could only connect slightly to the story through my own experience of losing a loved one to cancer. The book feels more like a collection of information rather than a narrative. I also found the author coming off on the arrogant side, which irks me a bit. While I appreciated Lucy’s epilogue, I regretted reading the book overall and wouldn't recommend it to others.

A beautiful read. Kalanithi's prose when writing about literature and life is lyrical and illuminating; when writing about being a surgeon, it is warm-hearted, insightful, astute. A part of me wished that he had taken a different path and shared his gift earlier. But then he wouldn't have touched so many lives as a surgeon - or been able to share his story of surgeon-to-patient here. The book feels unfinished - not surprisingly - but perhaps that is his legacy?

In a world in which we are inundated with memoirs, this stands out as a thoughtful and heartbreaking masterpiece.
