Thank you again to Mrs Bette Lee Crosby for this wonderful story! This is Book 1 in the Wyattsville Series and I’m exited to start book 2 soon!

I knew this read would be good because, Mrs Bette’s writing is just That GOOD! She knows how to hook you right from the get go and this story was no different.

Ethan Allen is just an 11 year old boy with a loud set of parents who do nothing but argue, his Mama, Susanna (a real character) always talking about going to New York and his Daddy, Benjamin, a controlling man who just wants the farm life. Poor Ethan caught in the middle with his dog, named “Dog” tends to spend his tile behind the house in some sort of lean to built solely by himself. We also meet his Grandma, Olivia and learn about his Grandpa, Charlie.

This story will open your heart and make your grateful for your crazy life. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed the characters in Spare Change. The way that Crosby could connect them on a personal level was outstanding! It was like you knew all of them as a family. Crosby did an excellent job with the ending as well, it left you wanting more. It was a bittersweet ending and one that kept me wanting more. Spare Change gets five stars from me and I can’t wait to start book two.

Spare Change is full of quirky southern characters that had me laughing and wishing I lived in a place like Wyattsville. Back then, neighbors weren't just passerbys but family. I love small town settings in books so this was huge plus for me.

Ethan Allen is something else and my heart felt for him. No child should go through what he did. Olivia was his perfect counterpart and together their relationship and interactions made this wholly enjoyable.

Even during the slower portions, it was still a thoughtful and heart-tugging journey. By the end of this one I was bawling so hard I couldn't see. I'm a Momma and now a Nana of 5, so if you have read this...then you know.

I love this author's writing and the emotions her words breathe into my heart. I sincerely appreciate being provided with a review copy. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.

Overall, it was a good read. And it's a quick read, so jump right in and enjoy. There were many times while reading that my heart raced, fearing for the child.

I was a bit off-put by the head-hopping and felt the journal entries could have been more effectively incorporated into the story, but non-authors probably won't even notice.

Wyattsville Novel Book 1

From Amazon: “Small-town gossip never much bothered Olivia Westerly. As a single career woman, she’s weathered her share. It’s easy to ignore the raised eyebrows over her late-in-life marriage to Charlie Doyle. But after he drops dead on their honeymoon, the whispers are salt on her raw grief. Especially when an orphaned, eleven-year-old-boy shows up on her doorstep, looking for the grandfather he never met.”

This is a charming story with enough suspense to form a firm plot. Despite it not being a genre of my first preference, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

I received a complimentary ecopy from the author. This did not affect my review.

Bette Lee Crosby is a wonderful storyteller, she writes in the vein of Fannie Flagg. Spare Change is the first of five in the Wyattsville series. This book is a real page turner that leaves you with lots to think about. Ms. Crosby takes on the fascinating issues of gossip, death, murder and what it really means to be a community and a family. I loved all the characters in this book, good and bad. I enjoyed reading and learning about the south. There's nothing more interesting than reading about small town people who are looking for where they all fit in. I have already downloaded the other four books!
