I would probably make this 3 1/2 stars. It’s a fun read, and I like the character development and interpersonal workings of the story and families. I also like the ethereal piece of the narrative that was unexpected since I read no blurb that hinted at it. I really had a lot of fun reading it. It’s not life-changing, but it’s a fun read with great characters. The beginning was the tiniest bit clunky, and made me question if I wanted to push through, but I’m glad I did. It’s a fun teenage love story with a tiny twist.

As always, this book gets better with every reread. This is my favorite book EVER and I’m so sad that it’s gone unrecognized for so long.

I will take one Marshall Holt, please and thank you.

This is my first Brenna Yovanoff book, and I really enjoyed her turns of phrase. Her writing style was beautiful. At times parts were a bit dramatic even though not much was actually happening, but overall it was such a smooth, dark, lovely piece of work that I just kept going and going because I had to reach the end. This book was easily devourable.

I wanted to pat all of the characters on the head - they were just going through so much. This book is as much about friendship as it is about romance, possibly even more so. Autumn had to be my favorite character.

I enjoyed a line in the Acknowledgements area about what Yovanoff's friend said about Waverly, because that kept going through my mind as I read it. She reminds me a bit of Dexter or Sherlock.

3.5/5

Fascinating romance between two flawed characters. I enjoyed Waverly's Sherlock Holmes-style sociopathy, and Marshall's character growth. And I think I'd both love and hate a friend like Autumn.

In a nutshell: An unconventional paranormal love story of two teens with opposite ambitions and background, who meet and connect in an unexpected way.

You know, Brenna Yovanoff used to be a given in terms of me liking her books, but the last two have fallen a bit flat. While I did ultimately like this one - and would probably lean more towards 3.5 stars if we had the option here - the book was pretty slow and I kept waiting for it to get to the point. The paranormal aspect here (astral projection, if you're curious) was kind of just used to get the two main characters speaking to each other, and not much attention was given to it in terms of WHY it was happening. If it were me, and I was suddenly showing up wherever a certain other person was, I'd want to know what the heck was going on, you know? That being said, the point of this book was definitely more "coming of age" than I'd been expecting. The characters' growth throughout the book WAS the point, which was fine, but I do wish I'd known that upfront before I started reading so I wouldn't have expected something the book wasn't ever going to deliver.

I saw this book make the rounds a lot before I decided to read it. It sounded like the kind of book I wished had been around when I was in high school, bleary eyed with insomnia and forever crushing on boys who weren't in AP classes and/or generally did not have their shit together. Yovanoff pulled me in with her characters, every last one of them, and I found this book impossible to put down (also largely because it is due to the library tomorrow). Finished while watching Mae play chicken with a much needed (for everyone) afternoon nap.

I love this author. Her books are amazing but this just isn't her best. I think I'd like it a lot better if this had been her first book or if it was my first time reading anything by her.

Book #22 Read in 2016
Places No One Knows by Brenna Yovanoff

Waverly is one of the popular, intelligent kids in high school; Marshall is a rough kid with some drug issues. The two connect....but is it real? Waverly, at night, ends up as a sort of ghostly presence where Marshall is...but both remember what happened in the light of day. This connection draw the two together but will they ever put their relationship out there to the social system in high school? This book was a decent mix of paranormal and romance and interesting characters. I enjoyed it. I received a copy of this book from Amazon Vine in exchange for a honest review.
