Like many others, I grew up learning the story of Nellie Bly and her journey around the world. What I NEVER knew was that another reporter was trying to beat her and nearly did. I am so grateful to Carolina Starr Rose for writing a children's picturebook that perfectly captures the time period and is beautifully illustrated by the talented Alexandra Bye. I was fascinated to learn about Bly and Bisland's obstacles and set-backs, but encouraged by their spunk and bravery at a time when women never did things like this . . . or at least we don't know about them YET. Bravo to this team for making an incredible book that will be an asset to home, public and school libraries all over the country.

When I learned about this book, it was the first time that I had ever heard that Nellie Bly had competition. I thought this was fascinating, and about a month ago, I suggested this book for purchase at my library. My hold request arrived today, and I'm excited for other readers in my county to enjoy this book as well. The text and illustrations convey the dual storyline in an engaging way, building suspense about different setbacks and the women's struggles and adventures towards achieving the same goal. This is a great nonfiction picture book about a little-known aspect of a legendary part of history, and I would definitely recommend it.

"25-year-old Nellie was plucky and quick. 28-year-old Elizabeth was thoughtful and reserved.... Yet both traveled faster than Phileas Fogg, turning his imaginary voyage into a real-life accomplishment, something no one - man or woman - had ever done before."

Interesting true story and wonderful illustrations. Now I want to read more about Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland!

I never knew about these women, both trying to travel around the world in 75 days (Nellie Bly starting first, followed by Elizabeth Bisland later the same day). This trip was inspired by Jules Verne’s famous novel, focusing on a fictional hero who traveled the world in 80 days. Loved their stories - this book has now inspired me to learn more about both women
