I was curious to read this book as an example of mens' attitude to women in the 19th century, and how it was beginning to change. Although a play, the text was surprisingly readable. It gave a glimpse into a different world where women were possessions and to think or act independently resulted in being patrionised or treated like a naughty child.

It is a good play. Really good keeping in mind the time it was written. I never heard of Henrik Ibsen (forgive my limited literary knowledge) but this one got me. I wikied this guy and boom - he is considered the best since Shakespeare. He definitely could. I haven't read so many from so many playwrights so it would be wrong to acknowledge such a statement. However what I can say about him and this work of him is that they both are really good.
The play builds up slow and the most importantly connects you to all the characters well. You need to feel the emotions well and for that you have to connect. I must confess that the theme is not at all unique. The play comes out as unique. The characters totally flipped out in the end showing a completely new or maybe a different dimension in them. This was pretty appeasing. I loved how the play ended. I was taken a little by surprise. ACT 3 was very intense and it justified the slow buildup in ACT 1 and 2. It is a short play so I think if you want to read something good in a small time this could be a nice pick.

I was pleasantly surprised by how clearly both sexism and feminism are portrayed in an eighteen-hundreds climate. This play feels refreshing considering the time period during which it was written.
