even the LOUDNESS of this book was very charming and almost sweet! it's like THE CORPORATION, THESE FOOTNOTES, REALLY OSTENTATIOUS METAPHORS CONCERNING BEAUTY PRODUCTS and GIRLS ARE EVERYTHING and i was like [jenny slate scream]* WHATEVER. I LOVE WOMEN!

this review is from someone that teared up throughout and at every word in the epilogue, at the
Spoilerinfinite possibility that is ahead for all women and the love and the work and the place in the world for them... and each girl's like, fucking future... god... is this even a spoiler? Does such a thing as 'the fatal flaw,' that showy dark crack running down the middle of a life, exist outside literature? I used to think it didn't. Now I think it does.

a book that is sweet and subtle inside and despite of its muchness

I really loved this book! I thought the feminist message was wonderful even if it was very obvious what the author was conveying (no hidden meanings here, everything was out in the open). The book was interesting, funny, action packed, and had some self-reflective chapters. I thought the idea of teenage pageant girls being stranded on an island was fantastic! It was reminiscent of Lord of the Flies, but with girls, pageants, “sexy” boy pirates, and a villainous corporation. The plot was ridiculous, and all over the place (in a fun way). It was very character driven, which I liked. I thought it was great that there were diverse characters, and the character sheets in the book were helpful in further understanding the girls (and differentiating them at first). My favorite characters were: Petra, Nicole, and Taylor.

Wow. This book was nothing like I expected. Brutally funny and seriously honest, it was a twisty ride from start to finish. Some parts were a little over-the-top and ludicrous, but it is a book about a plane of beauty queens crash landing on an island, so why not add some sexy pirates and crazy agents to the mix? Overall it was such a fun read, and the feminist values it advocates for are definitely something to think about in our patriarchal society.

I first bought this book to read while on a camping trip, and it had started out slow and led me to believe I would regret buying it in the first place. But after memorizing who is who in all the state-pageant girls galore, the ones left alive at least, I definitely warmed up to it, and I knew Libba Bray really pulled through once again. It was sure an odd fiction read, and nothing what I expected, but you definitely will be smiling in some parts and engrossed in others, and I had found myself reading all over my little campsite. Score: 4.3

I liked this, but not so much that I'm blind to its issues. This is less a witty satire, and more an extended rant by someone awfully fed up. It's funny, but a bit repetitive, and it's desire to cover a broad range of topics and offer inclusivity to everyone, results in the whole thing staying on a fairly superficial level. That being said, it made me smile, and nod every so often in agreement. Definitely falls under the "raging liberal agenda" umbrella, but that's just fine.

I’m not normally a fan of audiobooks, but I really wanted to read this book and kept finding reasons to read other things. I'm so glad I picked this up as an Audible book. Libba Bray is not only one of my favorite authors, she’s one of my favorite people. I absolutely loved listening to this story as Libba’s reading made all of the characters come to life for me. It felt like I was being told a crazy story by a close friend and not an author whose books I already love. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to laugh their faces off. Loved, loved, loved it.
