Although I have not read a bunch of military fiction (especially if you discount all the Joe Ledger books. But I do enjoy it if it is well written. [b:The Forever War|21611|The Forever War (The Forever War, #1)|Joe Haldeman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1386852511l/21611._SY75_.jpg|423] is one of my favorite stories ever written, and as I get older, I seem to enjoy it more. And that is what Armor reminded me of. There have been lots of comparisons to [b:Starship Troopers|17214|Starship Troopers|Robert A. Heinlein|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1614054412l/17214._SY75_.jpg|2534973]. But to be honest, if there is a comparison it should be to the movie Starship Troopers, which was just an Action Romp. Well maybe not the original movie, perhaps this one. Anyway, war is bad, the soldiers are just fodder for the machines of war and the military hierarchy, the survivors suffer just as much after the battle is over, oh yeah, and war is bad.

It sounds like I did not enjoy this book, but I really did. It is unfortunate that John Steakley wrote only two novels in his life. I really enjoyed his writing.

4 stars for Felix who should have been the focus of the entire book. 1 star for everything else. From epilogue: "Are you there, Felix? Are you there?" I wish he was.

Not sure how I feel. Not gripping, but I had to find out how everything eventually connected...

I had this one written down on a little piece of paper I keep in my wallet after reading a gushing review at another website. For months I kept an eye open for it until finally it had been re-issued as a classic.
It was OK but I'd hardly call it a classic. It does have its moments. While battle scenes begin to bore me after 10 pages, I have to admit these ones were pretty intense. And, yeah, the armor was pretty wild.
And, yeah, I did begin to feel for the poor guy. Damn, the more I think about it, the more I start to like it.
So why was I so anxious to finish it and move on to something else? I guess Steakley's prose just doesn't quite click with me.

Required Reading

If you enjoy sci fi, specifically military sci fi, then you must read this novel. One of my favorite books I’ve read in the past five years.

Fell off of this. It was well written and narrated, but I lost interest in the story.
