This is just an easy-going, fast-paced mystery, and I found it very entertaining! Despite the fact that it's a murder mystery, I would put this in the "light" category of mysteries, so it's perfect for those times when you're wanting something escapist and fun and quick. I think it would make a great beach or vacation read.

The synopsis of this novel made it sound like a Gothic southern mystery, but I would call this more of a cozy mystery. It wasn't/isn't a bad thing, but I was expecting more grit so I was a bit let down. I will read the second book, now knowing it is a cozy, and see how I like it. The story and characters were fun. A great quick light read. I can see Lifetime or Hallmark making this into a TV movie.

I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit - it was just what I needed I think. It’s a light murder mystery, with lots of fun sarcastic and dry humor, doesn’t get super dark or emotional or angsty like many murder mysteries with a slight romantic bent. It just felt light and refreshing in many ways.

I enjoyed how the characters weren’t all stereotypical or hated each other, and that in the gossip/misunderstandings it was dealt with in a realistic way and they gave each other the benefit of the doubt quite often. It didn’t have all the brooding angst and hot and cold of some character relationships. It wasn’t super unpredictable but I didn’t mind it since it was more the unfolding of how/why than who.

A nice light read.

Not mushy. My grandmother introduced me to Devereaux years ago. I haven't read and since she died. This was a nice reintroduction. My Nanny would have enjoyed it.

It was a little disappointing. I expected much more from Jude Deveraux. Remember how much fun was Montgomery series. I really liked one with mystery from a past when main characters were solving crime from around '20/'30 - it was "Sweet liar" and I was so excited that I will get a cosy mystery series from one of my favourite writers. But it wasn't what I expected. It was decent, with humour and drama, but the mystery - too much plot holes and ignoring obvious suspects.
It's not bad but she could do much, much better.

Terrible. Doesn't even sound like Deveraux's writing.
