This was a ride! If you don't like YA books where teenagers act like teenagers, then this isn't for you. If you love a hero who is a chaotic but loveable mess, welcome. Love how prejudices were examined in the human versus fae world and how Wyatt's inner journey as a character through the lens of a fated mate, a trans man, a Witch in a world where he doesn't belong. Edgmon used the contrasting worlds to amplify intersectionality so brilliantly. For the Trans Rights Readathon 2023.

Somewhere between a 3.5 and 4. Something about the world building and the background characters wasn’t right but really loved our main characters!

There is a lot of interesting potential to this book but the themes are so unsubtle that they absolutely bludgeon the reader - jarring and constantly disrupting immersion in the story. I feel like it could have used another good edit to correct this issue. I don't know... which is why I still gave this book three stars. Maybe I would have been less bothered by the heavy-handedness when I myself was still in high school? Maybe I'm just too used to the fact that the majority of YA books aren't really written for teens anymore but this particular book seems to be, and that's why it over explains so many things??

OOOH STUNNING!

This was SUCH a fun journey. Like, I normally find fantasy convoluted and kind of boring, but THE WITCH KING felt like it was written specifically for my brain. It kept me intrigued and on the edge of my seat, while pining for Emyr and rooting for the witches. It had me INVESTED. And Wyatt was a fantastic protagonist that had me laughing, crying, and everything in between!

I am sooo stoked for book 2!

This straddled the 3.75-4 line for me
A debut that got me very intrigued by the world and excited to read future books in the series but relied on secrets and a lack of communication a little too much to enjoy this entry as much as I wish I did.
