Ilusão de Amor à Espanhola, by Elena Armas

I’m honestly unsure how to rate this one. I read it so fast and was smiling like an idiot through most of it. But the writing really, really bothered me. The dialogue was so grating and clunky and I get really annoyed when writers have their characters talk without contractions, if that makes sense lol. Like “I am hungry, I am getting food” or “I am going to show you, you are going to trust me.” Maybe it’s just a pet peeve of mine but my mind snags on it every time and is like “SAY I’M AND YOU’RE!!!!”

Almost a 5 star for me, a great enemies to lovers modern romance. If you liked The Hating Game, you’ll most likely like this too

I hate every minute I spent sleeping on this book. It's been on my TBR for at least 8 months. ALL THE TIME AARON AND I COULD HAVE HAD TOGETHER. But we're here now.

There were so many swoon worthy moments - and I don't hand out those feelings frivolously.
Showing up in Spain, speaking fluent Spanish with her parents?! 10/10.
When he hears her ask for 3 tacos, convinces her to honestly ask for 4, and shows up with 5? 10/10.
Smuggling donuts after hours to surprise her? 10/10.
Aaron Blackford, everyone. A man after my own heart.

The catalyst for the 3rd act breakup felt a little ... weak in my opinion, but the book was such utter perfection I don't even care. I've convinced myself it worked and I'm happy to stick to that story.

Fake dating? ✔️
Office romance? ✔️
Grumpy/Sunshine? ✔️
Witty Banter? ✔️
Boy falls first? ✔️

Just when I had started to convince myself I needed a little brain break from romcoms, Elena Armas has won my entire heart and now I'm forced to continue to search for another hit this good. But she has a new release coming very soon, so maybe I won't have to try too hard to find it.

catalina has this irritating way of emphasising and highlighting aaron’s… Bigness. every 10 pages she mentions that his hands are Large, his body is Big, his chest is Huge, and uses all sorts of synonyms for big. it’s frankly very annoying.

this does not deserve the booktok hype.
