I liked the first two parts, but found them more journalistic and less historical than I would have liked. The book is really kicked up a notch in the final section where Grann questions some of the narrative tidiness of the rest of the book, particularly the role of the FBI, by stepping back and narrating his own experience researching the book. Overall, worth a read.

I knew about the forced boarding school assimilation. I knew about the forced alottment of land. But I had no idea about the forced guardianship system. And I certainly had no idea about the rampant murders. "There are so many of these murder cases. There are hundreds and hundreds."
Actually, I don't even know if "murders" is the right word here. "Holocaust " seems more fitting.
"The blood cries out from the ground."

I enjoyed this book much more than I was expecting. The author did a truly commendable amount of research and digging into the history of the Osage Nation and the heinous crimes committed against its members. He approached the topic with respect and wrote about those involved with dignity (where merited. Not you, Hale…). Grann’s writing style is descriptive and beautiful without being too grand or pedantic. The story is truly terrifying and a perfect example of the old saying: “truth is stranger than fiction.”

It is crazy to think of how much you don’t know about your own country. I know that our education is censored to a certain extent but this made me rethink everything I was taught. This is why education is important; being able to read and have access to this information.
